Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is Forensic Science?

Forensic Science is the application of the sciences to matters of the law. Attorney General Janet Reno stated, “The use of forensic science as a tool in the search for the truth allows justice to be done not only by apprehending the guilty but also by freeing the innocent.”

As a forensic tool, criminalistics concerns itself with examinations of physical evidence that has possible associations with criminal acts, or civil disobedience. By way of applied scientific practices, the criminalist, also referred to as forensic scientist, identifies physical features, analyzes composition and compares materials to establish origin. Their function starts with the search of the crime scene for items to be submitted as evidence and extends from analysis to interpretation of analytical results for police agencies, attorneys, court officials (Gurgin & Parker, 1972) and individuals.
